The Belgian currency
After a history extending over 170 years, the Belgian franc disappeared on 28 February 2002. However, it is still possible to exchange Belgian banknotes issued by the National Bank.
Exchange of Belgian banknotes
Banknotes in Belgian francs issued by the National Bank can be exchanged without any time limit at the National Bank's counters. However, coins denominated in Belgian francs can no longer be exchanged.

A brief history of Belgian banknotes and coins
After a history extending over 170 years, the Belgian franc disappeared on 28 February 2002. It was introduced in 1832, two years after the country achieved independence.
Belgian banknotes
The National Bank designed and printed Belgian banknotes from 1850 to the end of the 20th century. The last series was dedicated to compatriots who left their mark on the development of the arts in the last century.
Reproduction rules
To avoid any confusion or any malpractice the reproduction of Belgian franc banknotes which can still be exchanged at the National Bank's counters, is subject to specific rules.
